Exciting Opportunity for NW Iowa
Youth Dairy Challenge

Introducing a NEW Youth Dairy Challenge for ALL youth in Northwest Iowa.

The Youth Dairy Challenge is designed to give ALL youth, whether or not they live on a farm, have exhibited dairy, or are currently in 4-H or FFA, the opportunity to learn about and share their knowledge about production dairy.

On Monday, March 31, at 7:30 pm we will host an informational meeting at Northwest Iowa Community College, Room 304, Bldg. C, in Sheldon. Youth, parents, FFA advisors, club leaders, dairy producers and dairy businesses are invited and encouraged to come and find out more about how they can be a part of this new opportunity.

ISU Extension Dairy Specialist, Kevin Lager, Sioux County 4-H County Youth Coordinator, Cindy Cleveringa, Ag and Natural Resource Intern, Karina Fast and Angela Sellner, Trans Ova Genetics, have outlined a three-year plan. The Youth Dairy Challenge will partner with local dairy producers to include on-farm learning, as well as future area and state competitions and tours.

ISU Animal Science Professor Lee Kilmer, ISU Animal Science Youth Curriculum Specialist, Amy Powell and Western Iowa Dairy Alliance (WIDA) support this new venture and encourage youth and parents to attend on March 31.

Please share this opportunity with your 4-H’ers, their parents, FFA chapters, dairy producers and dairy related businesses and any youth you think might be interested.

Contact Cindy Cleveringa, by calling 712-737-4230 or email clever@iastate.edu if you have questions, want more information or would like to attend on March 31. If you are not able to attend, but want to continue to receive information about this opportunity, please call or email and we will add you to our contact list.

2014 Sioux County Youth Fair Swine Show and PEDV

Sioux County 4-H and FFA livestock exhibitors,

The 4-H Youth Committee, swine superintendents and local veterinarians met with Extension staff to make decisions regarding the 2014 4-H swine show in light of what is known about PEDV. Understanding that these decisions will not only impact our 4-H families, they were also made with a responsibility towards and serious consideration for our local pork producers.

2014 Sioux County Swine Show Changes:
• Live derby swine weigh-in and the derby swine class have been suspended for 2014.
• 2014 swine exhibitors will have the option to add ONE additional MARKET individual to compensate for no swine derby class.
• To shorten time on the fairgrounds and lessen the chance for an outbreak of PEDV at the fair, check-in and weigh-in for swine will take place Tuesday, July 15 from 6-10 pm, with all hogs housed by midnight.
• For 2014 every swine exhibitor will have the option to ultrasound scan ONE pig for a carcass contest. Exhibitors will indicate participation in the carcass contest on their fair entry and pay a $2.00 entry fee, exhibitors will designate the animal for the contest at weigh-in on Tuesday of the fair.
• 2014 4-H Swine Show will take place on THURSDAY, July 17 at 7:30 am.
• It is HIGHLY recommended that all swine be harvested directly from the fairgrounds with load-out Friday morning. Any animals on the ground at the time of load out will be harvested.
• Exhibitors choosing to take animals home from the fairgrounds assume the risk of spreading PEDV and other swine diseases.
• It is recommended there be no open swine show for 2014.

These changes may cause more work and will require patience and a willingness to help where needed. The decisions were not made lightly and every effort was made to be responsible and considerate of everyone’s situation and how this will affect them. However, we understand there is never a decision that pleases everyone.

Regardless how this impacts you and your situation, we hope you will take this opportunity to communicate and educate yourself, your child and the public about PEDV and demonstrate good production practices.

Thank you.
4-H Youth Committee
